Stella Shepard of Prince Edward Island developed a passion for reading and writing in childhood that followed her throughout life. Her stories have been published in four of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books, Atlantic newspapers, and magazines. Stella is a journalist, a life-long learner, and a photographer. She is a mother and a grandmother who lives on an organic farm with her husband, Reg Phelan.

Stella honours her Indigenous heritage, which is an important part of her life. As well, her ancestors David and Keisha Shepard were Black Loyalist slaves whose names were recorded in the Book of Negroes.

Her earliest fondness memories are happily trudging down a long, narrow, red-dirt road to a one-room schoolhouse with her eight siblings.

Raising Joshua on her own is the inspiration for her first novel, The Ashes of My Dreams.
